Exceptionally preserved, this unique block of row houses is characteristic of the architecture and town planning designs in Belgrade in the 1870s. Built at the same time, in 1869-1870, these houses of residential-business function belong to the first buildings erected in the newly laid out street according to the Regulation plan prepared by Emilijan Joksimović in 1867. They are part of the important commercial centre of Knez Mihailova Street and the most impressive evidence from that period and the planned reconstruction of the old downtown. The houses are unique in their architectural contents, their function and style. They were designed in the then current historic style, with dominant elements of romanticism and neo-renaissance. In the development of Belgrade architecture they signify the abandonment of timber frame construction and the Balkan tradition, and the acceptance of contemporary European building construction and architectural styles, as a reflection of social and cultural changes. The house at number 46 belonged to Veljko Savić, merchant, the tavern called “Krstina mehana” was at number 48 and the house at number 50 was the home of Hrisanta Kumanudi. All of them were eminent citizens of Belgrade and left their imprint in the intensive development of the city after the keys to Belgrade had been given over to Prince Mihailo.
